Mahogany Armchairs
Designed in the neoclassical taste promoted by architects and designers such as Robert Adam, this pair of open armchairs are carved from mahogany with padded oval backs surmounted by sunflower decoration flanked by pendant husks, with scrolled arms and curved seat rails carved with confirming trailing husks and cabriole front legs.
English, circa 1775
Related variations of this armchair, though not appearing in pattern books, were made by Thomas Chippendale, and also John Cobb, who were both proponents of the fashionable French-influenced rococo style. Several drawings by the designer
