In the Manner of Michelangelo Pergolesi

Composed of five hand-painted panels on canvas fitted in giltwood frames with pierced Vitruvian scroll lower registers, the pained scenes in the Neoclassical manner of Michelangelo Pergolesi, on faux-silk striped backgrounds, the three central panels with ribbon-tied female portrait medallions above ornamental jasperware flower vases within scrolled foliage, flanked by two panels featuring grisailles oval scenes and trompe l’oeil frames housing architectural views including a view of the Jardins de Luxembourg in Paris.
French, circa 1860

The Palais de Luxembourg was a Royal residence built for Marie de’ Medici. Its famous gardens are known from depictions such as Jacques Rigaud’s 1729 print which was heavily circulated in prints.

Michelangelo Pergolesi (fl. 1760–1801) was an Italian designer celebrated for his neoclassical motifs, including arabesques and grotesques. Influenced by French decorative arts, his work reflected the refinement of Louis XVI style, blending classical elegance with intricate ornamentation.
