A Rare Pair of Étagères
Attributed to Donald Ross

Constructed in Satinwood with tulipwood cross banding, decorated with the typical Donald Ross dotted marquetry trellis work to the upper and lower tiers, having single mahogany lined drawers in the apron, which are fitted with cast loop handles; rising from gilt dressed tapering square section legs shod with foliate bronze sabots, having undertiers inlaid in a conforming manner, dressed with arcaded ormolu galleries.
English, circa 1860

A pair of étagères of nearly identical form and decoration is illustrated in Christopher Payne, British Furniture 1820 to 1920: The Luxury Market, Antique Collectors' Club, 2023, p. 254.

Donald Ross, of 13 Denmark Street Soho London exhibited a drawing room suite at the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851. The Victoria and Albert Museum, South Kensington, London exhibits a pair of side tables, made in a virtually identical manner.

The model itself ultimately draws on the work of the Parisian maître ébéniste Pierre Garnier, whose elegant neoclassical forms were widely emulated by British makers in the mid-19th century.

Comparative Literature:

For the design source, see the Jones Collection Catalogue, South Kensington Museum, plate 33, which shows a closely related table by Pierre Garnier (1720-1800).

A comparable writing table by Garnier is reproduced in Pierre Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 2002.
