Giovanni Battista Torriglia (1858 – 1937)
Giovanni Battista Torriglia was one of the most skilled genre artists of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He undertook advanced painting studies in Florence. During his time there, Torriglia was focused on religious scenes and earned various commissions to create decorative schemes for the inside of several churches in nearby towns. From 1901, he re-located to Tuscany, and it was at this time that he started to move away from religious and historical painting. His paintings, which celebrated multi-generational bonds and family values, were often set in humble domestic interiors.
