Allegory of Abundance
By Ferdinand Wagner the Younger (1847-1927)
Painted in oil on canvas, the decorative panels housed within carved giltwood hinged frames, the scenes populated with putti surrounded by a plethora of symbolic elements representing the cycle of nature and abundance, including pomegranates handed down by a winged Cupid, flowing wine ewers poured in a bacchanalian fashion, overflowing baskets of grapes and pumpkins, and headdresses fashioned from a wheat sheaf. One panel signed, lower left, 'Ferd Wagner.'
German, circa 1890
Ferdinand Wagner the Younger (1847-1927)
Wagner was a German academic painter associated with the Munich school, celebrated for allegorical and genre subjects characterised by refined draughtsmanship and a strong classical sensibility. He exhibited widely in his native Germany during the late 19th century and was particularly sought after for his decorative frescos and screens, such as those which can still be seen at the Munich City Hall and in the "Ferdinand Wagner Hall" named after the artist in Passau.
